Who Knew?

Daily Prompt.

Back on January 21st, we asked you to predict what day #211 would be like. Well, July 30th is that day — how have your predictions held up so far? If you didn’t reply to the prompt at the time, is this year turning out to be as you’d expected?

I missed the original prompt. I think I was in Australia at the time. I don’t know what I’d have predicted for today.  But, I’m in the business of prediction. I’m up to my elbows in a story that involves the future (or lack of one) time travel and good coffee. It’s not turned into a slog yet, so I’m quite enjoying the odd alleyways and passages that the tale leads me through.

I could have predicted that the real me would be sitting here at the desk. I had no idea the other me would still be in King St, Newtown. At least I get free cappucinos. So, fresh this morning….

I walk into the coffee bar. This week it’s called ‘the Last Vowel’. I think the idea came from Liza. ‘…..Because it’s U!’….. well I’ve seen worse. Frank’s fiddling with the airconditioning. His brow is furrowed, which is fairly normal, he’s often confused.

‘I’ve tried resetting this bloody thing but it’s still raining outside. Frank’s misunderstood the concept behind ‘climate control’…. or at least this planet’s concept. In other places machines do what they say they’ll do. This euphemistic switch just makes the celing fan go round faster.

The coffee bar is based on Frank’s research into the subject. That is, what coffee bars look like on tv. He’s seen a bit of art too, so the place is part Edward Hopper, part some place where you’d run into The Fonz. It’s got a juke box, but Frank doesn’t know what it does. He knows that all stuff came from the fifties, so he’s added a bit of ‘millennial modern’ here and there. The result is a coffee bar that looks like most of the other ones in King St. It’s perfect camouflage…. if anyone could actual see it in the first place.

Apparently people do ‘see’ the coffee bar, but their brains tell them they don’t want to go in there. I know the feeling, plus Campo’s is just round the corner.  I do know plenty of places like that. What I don’t understand is why I could see the place and why I went in. Frank’s implied that the whole set up was for me and me alone…. but I’m not buying that. I’m not anybody’s Chosen One and I have no special powers. But here I am, back in the QZGRRL Bar, sorry ‘The Last Vowel’. …QZGRRL is so last Tuesday.

  1. Hey! I’m BasicallyBeyondBasic, the blogger who came up with today’s daily prompt. Nice take on the prompt considering you didn’t respond back in January. 🙂
