The Ambitious Drifter

Words, Images and The Occasional Noise

A Fearful Symmetry – Jeffrey Smart’s Vision

Photographers, artists, poets: show us SYMMETRY.

A fearful symmetry.  I’ve been meaning to post these photos as a tribute to the great Australian artist Jeffrey Smart, who died this year. His images, often showing the vague symmetry of authority, can be strangely disturbing.  The first photo is from The Hague, in Holland. The second was taken at Observatory Hill in Sydney, Australia. Looking down on the expressway to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I could see that Smart’s  Cahill Expressway paintings were not surreal at all. Here was the plain reality.
